Foyle System Rivers

Lough Foyle is located in northwest Ireland, and the gateway to and from the sea for the migratory Salmon and trout of its rivers. The system is one of the most scenic in Ireland, originating from watersheds among stunning mountain and lake scenery.

The Foyle system provides 900 miles of fishing on its rivers and has many options for anglers to suit all budgets utilising water in the public estate, day-ticket / club waters and private beats, depending on the venue. The rivers are ideal for fly-fishing with fly-fishing on the River Mourne one of the best.

Most of the Foyle’s rivers have a run of Grilse and Salmon at different times of the season e.g. The Rivers Finn & Foyle open for Salmon fishing in March, whereas the others open in April, but may not be worth fishing until June or even later - each is unique. The fish are dependent on water levels and every season is different - your guide has the knowledge of this seasons recent conditions and where fish may be found.

Sea Trout are a sea-running Brown Trout, fished for in freshwater when they return and gather in pools prior to running upriver to spawn. Sea Trout runs vary depending on the river, but generally from late May - July is the prime season. Low water and warm weather means slower upstream movements by the fish and night fishing - a time when a guide is essential for successful and safe fishing by visitors.

Brown Trout are the native freshwater trout of the Foyle. They respond well to dry-fly and to wet-fly fishing, although they are often overlooked by anglers after their larger cousins!

Coaching and guiding takes place on all the rivers of the Foyle, most of which are defined as small and medium spate rivers, with the Mourne and Foyle being larger at over 25m width. All provide good game fishing opportunities, for trout and salmon, and lend themselves to fly-fishing and the teaching of spey casting as they all have classic streamy water.

The Loughs Agency is the fishery conservation and enhancement body for the Foyle. This link is their guide to rivers and loughs of the Foyle.
